Base64 in plain terms
Base64 turns bytes into a restricted set of printable characters so data can move through text-oriented systems. You will often see it in API payloads, email content, data URLs and configuration values.
Convert plain text to Base64 or turn Base64 back into readable UTF-8 text. Pick a mode below and get the result instantly in your browser.

Choose Encode, type or paste your text, and convert it to Base64. Turn on Base64URL when the result will be placed in a URL, filename, token or another context where + and / are inconvenient.
Choose the Decode mode, paste the encoded value, then run the decoder. Standard Base64 and the common URL-safe alphabet are both accepted, and UTF-8 text is restored when the bytes represent text.
Regular Base64 uses + and / and may end with = padding. Base64URL uses - and _ instead, and unpadded output is common. The underlying data is the same; only the text-safe alphabet differs.
Base64 is reversible without a secret key. It is useful for representation and transport, but it does not hide or secure passwords, tokens or confidential data.
The encoder and decoder run with JavaScript in your browser. The text placed in the conversion boxes is not sent to our server to perform the Base64 operation.
